PAINTING THE INTERIOR OF THE NEW YORK SUBWAY The accompanying cut exhibits a portion of one crew paint-ing the section of the New York subway betwren SixtiethStreet and Forty-Seventh Street. The material, known asAsbestine fireproof paint, controlled by the Alden Spears SonsCompany, of Boston, Mass., and especially prepared for under-ground work, is applied by the employment of a small, clever device, technically termed spraying machine. For conveni*eiice in changing the location of the machine as the work pro-gresses, it is stationed upon a set of platform trucks particularlydesigned to run on the subway track. The machine is simple inconstruction. It consists of a 6-in. x 30-in. air chamber, whichstands perpendicularly over a double-acting pump. A long. PAINTING THE INTERIOR OF THE NEW YORK SUBWAY handle gives a powerful leverage and by gradual strokes a pres-sure of 100 lbs. to 120 lbs. is easily maintained. The paint isdrawn to the pump through a I-in. suction hose and distributedthrough two or more V,-in. discharge hose. One man at thehandle can furnish sufficient pressure to supply ten or a dozendischarge hose. At the end of each distributing hose is a longspraying rod supplied with a nozzle with a minute aperture, through which the paint is forced in the form of a descriptions of nozzles are manufactured, whichchange the nature of the spray. Each spraying rod is guidedfrom right to left by an expert operator or sprayer, the streambeing controlled by the sprayer by means of a stopcock. Thelong rod renders scaffolding entirely unnecessary, which wouldmaterially impede the progress as well as increase the expense. It is conservatively estimated that ten men with the as-sistance of this apparatus can perform the same am
