It will be recalled that several years ago rumors wereafloat that electric locomotives were to be used on oneof the steam terminal roads of Chicago. The rumorwas founded on the fact that Henry Villard, then presi-dent of the North American Company, was attemptingto organize a large terminal system at Chicago and an. 67-TON ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE. order had been placed for an electric locomotive. Theproject fell through, but the locomotive was completedand is now at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Phila-delphia, where it was built. The plans were drawn byFrank J. Sprague, Dr. Louis Duncan and Cary It was intended for special experimentalwork in handling heavy freight and switching and isbuilt for slow speed and heavy traction. The generalfeatures are shown in the engraving. In some respectsit is similar to what is known as the consolidated typeof locomotive used for heavy freight work. The drivers are 56 inches in diameter, the end onesonly being flanged. The connecting rods are doublejointed to allow flexibility of movement. The weight ofthe armature is directly on the wheels and not on thejournals, while that of the field magnets is on the journalsthrough the pedestal boxes.
