Blue-grey clouds view high tide seawater embayment with ice floes towards saltmarsh ice, west end Outer promenade, Fairhaven, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach between Fairhaven and St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, in December 2010 displayed large areas of land-fast sea ice, several centimetres thick. A grey sky view, looking west from the western end of the Outer Promenade seawall around Fairhaven Lake, towards calm high tide seawater with loosely-packed ice floes. The saltmarsh in the background has thickened and expanded on to the beach below the camera.
