Water treatment. View of a sedimentation tank at a water treatment works. Water taken from local rivers is treated with aluminium sulphate & pumped into the sedimentation tanks. A flocculent precip- itate of aluminium hydroxide forms and sinks to the bottom, taking with it fine suspended matter & small algae. The water overflows into slotted collecting troughs (foreground), leaving the sediment behind. It then undergoes slow sand filtration before being chlorinated and fed into the mains supply. The photograph was taken at the Ormesby water treatment works, Norfolk, which supplies the Great Yarmouth area with drinking water taken from the Norfolk Broads.
