RESULTS AND DISCUSSION We tagged 150 giant red sea urchins, Strongvlocentrotus franciscanus, in January 1976, off La Jolla, California (Figure 3). We employed a tagging rate of one sea urchin every 2 min and at a tag cost of less than five cents per urchin. Reobservation data were collected on 40 sea urchins. All data points in the graph were derived from actual observations within the test area; hence some sea urchins were not accounted for owing to movement from the test area or unrecovered fatalities. Test recalcification in the area of the tag was not observed in any of the sea urchins tagged by this method. However, one sea urchin, tagged without an identification disc, was removed months after tagging with no apparent ill ef- fects. Many urchins showed signs of test decalcification or thinning in the vicinity.
