In April, 1861, when news cameof the firing on Fort Sumter, although he had been prostrated bya lingering fever for six weeks previously, yet with the assistanceof a friend he walked to the Court House to a hastily-called meet-ing and was one of the first to enroll his name as a soldier. AtCamp Curtin being still too weak for active duty he was discharg-ed by Surgeons certificate, but Governor Curtin immediatelyauthorized him to raise a company of his own.
