Depression. A depressed young woman stares out of a window. She may be experiencing feelings of loneliness, sadness, hopelessness and pessimism. Sufferers of depression tend to have a general loss of interest in life, combined with a sense of reduced emotional well-being. Depression appears to affect more women than men. However, this may just reflect that women more often seek medical advice for the problem. This woman might also be suffering from agoraphobia, a fear of going into open spaces or other public places. Sufferers can eventually become completely housebound.
