The generators are excited from an exciter driven bya belt from the fly-wheel of the engine. The boiler equip-ment consists of three Stirling 228-hp hand-fired water and condenser water are obtained from the River adjacent to the power station. The waterflows through a 15-in. sewer pipe to a well 25 ft. deep and10 ft. in diameter, from which it is drawn by the condensers are of the jet type, and, together with thecondenser pumps, are located in a pit in the rear of theboilers. Immediately above them is a tank used in secur-ing a vacuum in starting the engines. The boiler feedpumps built by the Piatt Iron Works, with cylinders 7 4^ ins., are employed. The piping is such that eitherpump may be used for low duty or as a boiler feed STEEL SPAN ACROSS ST. MARYS RIVER AT DECATUR These pumps, as well as the other apparatus, dis-charge into a Cookson feed-water heater. For the 550-volt trolley in Decatur the voltage is lowered from that ofthe machine potential by an oil-cooled transformer locatedin the generating station. CAR SHOP AND CAR HOUSESAdjacent to the power house is a car house constructedwith concrete The building is 33 ft. wide, 151 , 22 ft. high, and contains two tracks. Each track is pro-vided with a concrete pit 60 ft. long and 4 ft. deep. Themachine shop and general repair shop is located in therear of the building, the machine shop being supplied witha lathe, a shaper, drill-press and an emery wheel, Heavy work, such as turning wheels and pressing them on and offaxles, is done at the brass foundry in Fort Wayne. Themachinery in the shop is driven by a direct-current for this is obtained from a generating set installedin the power
