Thisdevelopment had becomepossible because theBritish supporting theAustralians north of the Somme had been counterattacked and driven backand could not clear the Chipilly Spur. How the Americans (131st Infantry) happened to be in Chipilly Ido not know, but they were there and observed what was befalling theirAustrahan comrades south of the Somme. Their job, as they saw it, wasto take that spur—and they took it. One viewing its almost precipitoussides in the neighborhood of the river is unable to see how the feat wasachieved.
