Inflamed oesophagus. Light micrograph of a section through an inflamed oesophagus (oesophagitis), caused by acid reflux. Reflux is where stomach acid travels up the throat and into the oesophagus. The normal lining of the oesophagus is not designed to deal with the high level of acidity and so damage and inflammation can occur.
