Manysea ducks undoubtedly can be induced to nest in a wildstate beside safe and attractive waters, and they shouldincrease in numbers rapidly in places where they areproperly looked after and where their natural enemiesare closely controlled. The mallard undoubtedly is the best duck for the gamepreserve where hand-rearing is carried on, and the mal-lards are by far the most abundant of all fowl on theEnglish preserves. The dusky duck, often called theblack mallard, has been domesticated in many places inAmerica, and it should be reared on preserves quite aseasily as the mallard is. In England the teal, sprig-tail and widgeon have been successfully propagated bygamekeepers, and all of the river ducks can be madeabundant, without doubt, on American preserves wheregamekeepers are employed. Since the wood-duck nestsin trees, suitable nesting places should be provided for. DUCKS, GEESE AND SWANS 11 them. They have been domesticated in many placesand often breed in parks and zoological gardens, andboth the ducks and their eggs can be procured fromAmerican game farmers. A mixed bag is attractive and desirable, and the gamepreservers, no doubt, will successfully rear most, if notall, of the fresh water ducks when game preserving be-comes common. The English teal, which has been suc-cessfully bred on preserves, and some of the other Eng-lish ducks probably can be introduced to advantage andmade abundant on American game farms and English game farmers have both the birds andtheir eggs for sale in large numbers. The wild geese for the most part breed in the farNorth, and it seems doubtful if many species could behandled on the preserves in the United States. The, Canada, or common wild goose, has been domesticatedin many of the States, and undoubtedly it can be rearedin large numbers on many preserves and game farmsf
