Ferroptosis, illustration. Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of programmed cell death caused by the peroxidation (free radical-mediated damage, bottom right) of phospholipids in the cell membrane. Cells are usually protected against peroxidation by the selenium (SE, red spheres)-dependent enzyme glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4, orange). Inhibitors of GPX4 lead to the accumulation of damage and trigger cell death.
