Obese man with fatty liver. 28-year-old man with a BMI (body mass index) reading of 48 and a fatty liver. BMI readings over 30 are considered clinically obese. Fatty liver disease (FLD, steatorrhoeic hepatosis) is where fat accumulates in the liver. There are numerous possible causes, including alcoholism and metabolic disorders. The condition leads to an enlarged liver. If left untreated, scar tissue (cirrhosis), reduced liver function, and sometimes liver cancer, can result.
