Cave water scorpion mouthparts. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mouthparts (white) of a water scorpion (Nepa sp.) found only in the Movile Cave, Romania, where life has been cut off from the outside world for the last million years. It has evolved in total darkness over that time and has lost its eyes as a result. The piercing mouthparts are used on its prey.
