St Paul's church & monastery beside Jarrow Slake founded AD681 by Benedict Biscop, the present chancel (R) is his original chapel built of reused Roman stone. The Victorian nave (L) is on the site of a separate basilica dedicated in 685. The two churches became linked by a pre-Conquest structure & then in 1072 by the Norman tower. At the same time the Saxon monastic buildings, abandoned in the early C9th after Danish raids, were removed & the monastery reconstructed on Benedictine lines.
