Oise-Aisne American Cemetery
The Oise-Aisne American Cemetery lies one and a half miles east of Fere-en-Tardenois, Aisne in Picardy, France. It covers acres and is the second of 8 large permanent American World War 1 military Cemeteries outside of America. The Cemetery contains the graves of 6,012 American soldiers who died fighting in the area, most at the second Battle of the Marne and the Oise-Aisne campaign. Some 597 of these are unidentified. Included among the soldiers buried here is the poet Joyce Kilmer. There is also a graveyard nearby for former soldiers who were dishonorably discharged, until 1987 Eddie Slovik, the only American soldier executed for desertion during the 2nd World War, was buried here. The graveyard is know as Plot E. There is a monument for 241 Americans missing in action, their names are inscribed on the walls of the chapel. Initially established on August 2nd 1918 by the 42nd Division as a temporary Cemetery it was retained as a permanent cemetery by congress in 1921. The French government provides the site at no cost.
