His love of nature, ofmusic and other arts made his trip to Europein 1854 a keen joy to him. Becoming interested in conditions in ourSouthern States, Savage in 1859 gave himselfheart and soul to do all in his power toward thefreedom of the slaves. In the spring of 1861,when it had become clear that war was the onlyalternative, he joined the Salignac Drill Cluband was the first member of that Club to applyfor a commission in Gordons Regiment. With. JAMES SAVAGE, Jr. JAMES SAVAGE, Jr. 23 his friends Wilder Dwight and Greeley S. Curtisa plan had been formed to organize a regimentof infantry and offer it to the United graduates of West Point, Messrs. Gordonand Andrew, were induced to take the highestappointments, and the Second Regi-ment was thus formed. Major Henry L. Hig-ginson, in his address at the giving of the Sol-diers Field to Harvard College, said: We twofellows [James Savage and Henry Higginson]went to Fitchburg, just after war was declared,to recruit a company for the Second Massachu-setts Infantry, and when our regiment wasready to march, the colors were entrusted tous. This recruiting was strange work to us all,and the men who came to our little recruitingoffice asked many new questions, which I didmy best to answer; but often these recruitswould turn to the captain as they called him,listen to his replies, and then swe
