In1848 he was appointed traveling agent for thePeoples Insurance Company of Worcester,retaining the position until 1852. From thattime until 1856 he was in the railroading busi-ness. In 1852 he was assistant superintend-ent of the Central Ohio Railway Company,and removed to Ohio, where he was laterpromoted to the office of general superintend-ent of the road. He was one of the organ-izers of the first association of railroad su-]ierintendents in the United States, the meet-ing for the purpose being held in , in 1853. In i860 ]\Ir. Chase resumedthe first insurance business as the Westerngeneral agent for the New England Fire In-surance Company of Hartford; in 1863 wasassistant general agent of the Hartford Fire. CONNECTICUT 1951 Insurance Company, and in 1867 he was elect-ed president of the company, succeeding Tim-othy C. AUyn. For forty-one years the man-agement of the business of the company wasin his hands, and was most effectively han-dled, placing- him in the front rank of insur-ance men of the country. The Hartford FireInsurance Company is one of the oldest in thecountry ; in its business of one hundred yearsit has had only six presidents, and ]\lr. Chaseexceeded all in his length of service. WhenMr. Chase became president, the office of thecompany was on ]\Iain street, in very limitedquarters. At his suggestion a lot was pur-chased on the corner of Pearl and Trumbullstreets, and a handsome granite building erect-ed.
