Atevening the picket formed a line of battle for support, and thestorming party went forwardwith matches into the town and in thevery teeth of the enemy, set it on fire which soon lighted up theheavens for miles around. A dead Union cavalryman was foundand taken from one of the houses first. The enemy opposite wereperfectly amazed and soon could be seen in line of battle amid thegleam of the burning buildings, all of which were soon in blackenedruins. The party returned to the bivouac at 11 P. M. and all lay theretill sunset on Sunday, February 7, when they started for camp. Theroads were very muddy, it having
