The 40-storeys, 187 m (615 ft) New York Life Insurance Building (centre background view) was designed in 1926 and completed in 1928 at a cost of $21 million. The pyramidal gilded roof is made up of 25,000 gold leaf tiles. It was made a National Landmark in 1972 and is located on Madison Avenue. The Empire State Building, 5th Avenue, was built 1930-31. At 301 m (1250 ft), it was the tallest building in the world for 40 years.
