Procaine. Molecular model of the local anaesthetic procaine (or novocain), formula: C13H20N2O2. Atoms are spherical, and colour-coded: carbon (blue), hydrogen (white), nitrogen (light blue) and oxygen (red). Procaine is a synthetic drug based on the naturally occurring cocaine. Cocaine was once used in surgery, but was withdrawn once its toxic and stimulant effects became known. Procaine is a less potent anaesthetic, and has a shorter duration of action, but is non-toxic.
