Housing the University of OxfordÕs vast collections of art and antiquities, the Ashmolean Museum was established in 1683 and is the oldest museum in the United Kingdom. This monolithic Khmer chaitya, in the form of a miniature tower-shrine, once stood within a temple complex and depicts the goddess Prajnaparamita (ÔThe Perfection of WisdomÕ), who personifies the transcendental knowledge embodied in the great Mahayana Buddhist Sutra of that name.
