A public meeting was held July 29,which resulted in the formation of theWells and McComas Monumental Associa-tion. The removal of the remains tookplace on the 12 th of September, and werereinterred in the square at the intersectionof Gay, Aisquith and Monument streets,with appropriate ceremonies. The base of the monument was erectedover their remains in 1871, and the workwas completed two years GEORGE PEABODT. MONUMENTS OF THE MONUMENTAL CITY. On the 7th of October, 1849,there died in Baltimore City, aliterary genius, who had been thevictim of fate and misfortune allhis life. Edgar Allan Poe, is a namethat is known by every Americanof literary bent. At the time of his death the citygave him a grave and nothing the lapse of a number ofyears, a relative of the unfortunategenius ordered a stone for the mark-ing of his grave, but this design wasprevented by an accident, and nofurther move was made in this direc-tion until 1865. At a regular meeting of the Pub-lic School Teachers Associationheld on the 7th of October in thatyear, a resolution was offered forthe appointment of a committee offive to devise some means bestadapted in their judgment to perpetuatethe memory of one who has contributedso largely to American literature. A committee was at once appointed. The committee reported in favor of theerection of a monument, and that measuressh
