View S of the St Duzec Menhir, a Christianized Neolithic standing stone near Lannion, Côtes-d'Armor, Brittany, France. The granite monolith is some high. The cross, bearing an image of the crucifixion on the S side, was added in 1674 when a chapel (Chapelle de Saint Uzec) was built near Penvern hamlet, about 500m away. At the same time, Christian scenes & symbols were carved & painted on the S face of the menhir: a cock representing the denial of St Peter, the Virgin Mary flanked by a sun & moon (both with a human face), instruments of the Passion & the veil of Veronica. Another cross bearing the figure of Christ crucified was painted below. The vertical grooves are considered to be weathering marks caused by wind & rain.
