Mr. Priest was a leading democrat and, though strong inthe party faith, he was courteous to political opponents andhad the respect of men of all political creeds. He was thedemocratic candidate for senator in 1884 and 85, and polledmore than the full party vote. He was a kind and consider-ate employer, honorable in all his dealings, and had built upa prosperous and increasing business. 19 CHAPTER CHURCHES AND HOMES. ITCHBURG does not lack earnest andefficient church organizations and attractivehouses of worship. The First Congregational Church(Unitarian) was formed Jan. 7, present Unitarian church edifice at thehead of the upper common was erected in1837. The first settled minister, Rev. Johny Payson, was ordained Jan. 27, 1768, andremained until May, 1794. His successor. Rev. SamuelWorcester, was ordained a pastor in September, 1797. Dur-ing the interval between the two pastorates the pulpit wassupplied by Rev. John Kimball, Rev. John Miles, Rev. and others. Rev. Samuel Worcesters relations withthe church were dissolved in September, 1802. About this time the church was divided into two societiesand the parochial powers of the town dissolved. The FirstParish held the church property, and in 1804 ordained theRev. William Bascom as their minister. In 1812 at his ownrequest the parish granted Mr. Bascom a dismissal and thesocieties were temporarily re-united. T
