Special couplershave been designed for this purpose, and in some cases the cars arecoupled together or disconnected while in service in accordance withtraffic requirements. In other instances they are kept permanentlycoupled. The class of controller used for this purpose is of the I he cars are built by private companies, but there is one generalrepair shop for the system. Ordinary running repairs are eflfectedat the car sheds, but periodical overhauling and larger repairs arecarried out at the general repair shop. This shop is a special featureof the system, and is equipped throughout with traversers, overheadcranes, and every class of labor-saving appliances.
