20/08/13 A view showing a giant crane loading a container ship at Southampton docks, Hampshire. The CMA CGM Amerigo Vespucci is due to set sail for Rotterdam loaded with a staggering 13830 containers. The cranes loaded and unloaded nearly 3,500 containers over the last 36 hours. The newly loaded cargo is stacked eight storeys high and has joined other containers en-route from the Far East heading to other European ports. Southampton is the UK's second largest port. Spread over a 726 acre site, the dock handles a staggering 39 million tonnes of cargo in more than containers each year. Twelve cranes can operate on upto five ships at any time.
