Infected sebaceous cyst. Close-up of an infected sebaceous cyst on a patient's back (at centre). It appears as a white swelling with multiple discharging pustules. The lower region of the cyst is deep red and affects the surrounding skin. The cyst is weeping and the natural outcome is to burst, releasing the contents. The condition is most painful prior to the discharge of pus. Sebaceous cysts form when the secretory gland associated with the hair follicle (sebaceous gland) becomes blocked. The formation of the cyst is harmless but the infection needs attention. Treatment is incision and drainage with a course of antibiotic drugs.
