The sorrowful Virgin Mary gently clasps her son’s wounded body around the chest following his Crucifixion. Square detail of late-1400s Flemish Burgundian Pietà in the Cathédrale Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte at Nevers, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France. The polychrome limestone artwork echoes the style of Claus Sluter, court sculptor to the Duke of Burgundy from the 1380s.

Nevers, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France: the grieving Virgin Mary gently holds her son’s wounded body in her arms following his crucifixion, in this square detail of a late-1400s Burgundian Pietà. The polychrome limestone sculptural group, originally in a Nevers church destroyed in the 1700s, is now preserved in the city’s ancient Cathédrale Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte. Christ’s head, wearing the crown of thorns, slumps to the right. The grieving Virgin Mary, her sorrowful face framed by long golden hair, appears to be a younger woman than depicted in similar artworks. The Pietà is by an unknown artist, but is typical of 15th century Flemish Burgundian sculpture influenced by the earlier style of the important Dutch sculptor Claus Sluter ( - ), who served as court sculptor to the Duke of Burgundy from the 1380s.
