False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a female yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Like other insects, the mosquito has compound eyes (green), consisting of many facets. Also seen here is the labrum (red), a modified stylet which forms the food channel. The labrum is enclosed in its protective sheath. The females of Aedes aegypti are the carriers of an arbovirus which causes yellow fever in humans. This disease was once a fatal and endemic infection throughtout the tropics, but now occurs only in tropical Africa and parts of northern South America. Magnification x14 at 6x7cm size.
