In his own day he was thoughta second Rembrandt, and, though modern critics are less enthusi-astic, he had the instinct and execution of a true artist. His works,which are to be found in every large country house in England,form an invaluable record of the celebrities of his time. With thegreat wealth he amassed he built an imposing house near Hounslow,where he now lies
