Glutamate transporter protein, molecular model. This is a membrane protein that facilitates the uptake of glutamate by a cell, thus playing an important role in neurology in higher organisms. This model shows a glutamate transporter protein found in the micro-organism Pyrococcus horikoshii. The model shows the bowl-shape formed by the trimer, with the three colours indicating the three chains. The total number of amino acids in this protein is 422. Pyrococcus is a thermophilic genus of the Archaea.
