Historical image. 18 April 1906 - the Great San Francisco earthquake. Residents overlooking downtown San Francisco as fires break out across the city. The event measured equivalent to and ruptured 296 miles along the San Andreas fault. The shaking lasted from 45-60 seconds and some places such as Shelter Cove near the north end of the rupture experienced up to 28 feet () of offset.
