On the beach at Port Olimpic, Barcelona, Spain
On the beach at Port Olimpic, Barcelona, Spain. Port Olímpic was built up for the 1992 Olympic Games, so it now contains a fancy marina with some nice public sculptures, along with a number of posh bars and restaurants. Its dominant twin towers, visible from nearly any point on the beach, house the luxe Hotel Arts Barcelona. Two towers of similar height that stand out in the city skyline are to be found here, at the end of Carrer de la Marina, facing the sea: Hotel Arts, a luxury hotel by the architects Bruce Gram and Frank Gehry, and Torre Mapfre, designed by Iñigo Ortiz and Enrique de León. Other interesting things to see are the golden fish sculpture, Peix, by the architect Frank Gehry, opposite the Casino de Barcelona and the Olympic Port, the giant fountain by Josep M. Mercè, and the face of the sculpture David i Goliat, by Antoni Llena. Barcelona’s golden fish sculpture, known as Peix, is one of many pieces of public art found in and around the city. The piece sits in the Port Olimpic at the base a large skyscraper, the Hotel Arts, one of the tallest buildings in the city. Renowned architect Frank O. Gehry was commissioned to build the piece for the 1992 Summer Olympics, which were held in Barcelona and brought the city to the attention of the world. It faces the sea and measures 35 m x 54 m (about 114 by 177 feet). It is made of stone, steel, and glass. Its copper-colored shiny metal plates sparkle in the sunshine and make the sculpture a real eye catcher. The sculpture can be seen from several of Barcelona's beaches
