As an example, I will give the followingcase : Necrosis of Upper and Lower Jaw-bones.—Christian Sack, aged21 years, born in Germany, match-maker by trade, admitted October14th, 59. Patient was admittedin the hospital the 9th of November, 1858, for Necrosis of the inferiormaxillary, caused by working in the fumes of phosphoric acid been employed in the manufacture of fuse for matches : He was. When discharged there was a slight swell-ing on the left side of the jaw, but which was not at all painful. DuringJanuary he was again employed about the manufactory, though not inthe fumes. In the course of eight or ten weeks the left side of the jawbegan to swell, and gave him considerable pain; he however, con- 93 tinued to work at the manufactory until the latter part of May, whenthe swelling increased and the pain became so great that he consulteda Homoeopathic physician, who did him no good! !! The pain con-tinued, as did the swelling, and about the first week in August thepatient applied flaxseed poultices, which in six or seven days was fol-lowed by the formation and discharge of matter through an openingwhich was formed at the angle of the jaw.
