To answer the question why this is so,an examination of the constituents of the soil is necessary. SUGGESTIONS 1 Dry a small amount of the soil and mash the lumpsup fine. Pick out the small stones and test them^withacid to find if they contain lime. 2 Take about four ounces of the dirt and rub itthrough a wire sieve. 3 Wash the part that will not pass through the sieve,until it is free from the fine dirt. This is the coarsegravel. 4 Again sift the soil, through a finer sieve, wash, andcoarse sand will be the result. 5 Take some of the fine material and boil it in a test MAY-NATURE STUDY 217 tube. Pour water over this through a long tube thatreaches to the bottom of the test tube, and catch the waterthat overflows. When the water runs off clear, pour offall the water and dry the substance.
