Solar Settlement. This settlement, in the Vauban district of Freiburg, Germany, was built between 2000 and 2005. It consists of 59 homes in units with large solar panel arrays on the roofs, with photovoltaic cells that obtain energy from sunlight and convert it to electricity. The estate was designed by German architect Rolf Disch (born 1944), and has won numerous environmental awards. It is said to be the first housing estate with an overall positive energy balance, as well as being emissions free and carbon neutral. Excess electricity from the solar panels has been sold at a profit. Photographed in May 2011.
