Terracotta figurine from Aigai necropolis

Greek clay of female figurine wearing a white chiton, from the necropolis of Aigai, Macedonia. 6th - 2nd c. BC. These figurines were mold-cast in terracotta then coated with a liquid white slip before firing and were sometimes painted afterward in naturalistic tints with watercolors. They were placed as grave goods in the tombs of their owners, very likely without any sense that they would serve the deceased in the afterlife. They do not seem to have been specially made for burial.
