Thefirst emanation from his mind was theinvention of a screw for the propulsion otwater craft, but on application for apatent, found that he was forestalled buta short time by John Ericsson. Subse-quently he invented a machine for sowingwheat in drills, which was used to a greatextent throughout the west. He then stud-ied medicine, and in 1847-8 attendedlectures at the Indiana Medical Collegeat Laporte, and in 184S-9 at the Ohio\ Medical College at Cincinnati. After making some improve-ments which increased its efficiency, it wassubmitted to severe trials by our govern-ment at the arsenals at Frankfort, Wash-ington and Fortress Monroe, and at otherpoints. The gun was finally adopted byour government, as well as by that of GreatBritain, Russia and others. BENJAMIN RYAN TILLMAN, who wona national fame in politics, was bornAugust II, 1847, in Edgefield county, SouthCarolina. He received his education in theOldfield school, where he acquired therudiments of Latin and Greek, in additionto a good English education. He left schoolin 1864 to join the Confederate army
