The Cretan island of Spinalonga, a defensive island that was used as a leper colony. The island was once a peninsula connected to the mainland, but was seperated by the Ventians to allow for a more defensible position. Fortified by the Venetians, it dominates the harbour approaches. Greece maintained Spinalonga as a leper colony until 1957.
