Human garbage thrown into the Yalong River in Ganzi. A restocking town for local Khampa nomads and seat of the county government, Ganzi was little more than a Tibetan hamlet ten years ago. A push from the government to develop the hinterland witnessed an explosion in the size and population of Ganzi - mass resettlement of nomads into urban centres and tax incentives for Han Chinese to go and develop businesses there. With little social infrastructure dealing with waste disposal in place, the majority of locals throw their waste, un-bagged or sanitised, into the river. Ganzi is the first major town met by the Yalong, a tributary of the Yangtze, as it makes its way to the sea.
