Statue of James Watt (1736-1819), Scottish engineer and inventor, with a gull and bird guano. Watt made numerous practical improvements to the steam engine of his day. By 1790, the superior Watt steam engine had completely replaced the older Newcomen variety. His inventions included the double-acting engine and the pressure gauge, and using the centrifugal governor for steam engines. This bronze statue, by British sculptor Francis Leggatt Chantrey (1781-1841), was erected in 1832, in George Square, Glasgow, Scotland. Guano can corrode bronze if not removed.
