Re-construction of a Flipping Wing, from a drawing in the Codex Atlanticus, by Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). Codex Atlanticus - Manuscript B, folio 88 v. 1483-6. Leonardo had a deep understanding not only of the specific concept of how a wing flaps, but also of the driving force achieved by the 'compression' of air.
