An evening view of Mont Saint Michel, the famous tidal island in Normandy, northern France

Previously known as Mont Tombe, Mont St Michel is a world famous tidal island in Normandy, Northern France. According to legend, in the year 708AD the Archangel Saint Michael instructed Saint Aubert, bishop of nearby Avranches, to build a church on the Mont. Aubert repeatedly ignored this instruction. That is until Saint Michael burned a hole in the bishop's skull with his finger. The spire on top of the mont is topped by a statue of the Archangel Saint Michael.
