Young Russian Jewish immigrant at Ellis Island, 1905. Photographed by Lewis Hine (1874-1940), who was known for his images of poor immigrants. Hine gave his photograph the title "Young Russian Jewess, Ellis Island" and appended a quote from Walt Whitman: "Inquiring, tireless, seeking what is yet unfound, / But where is what I started for so long ago / And why is it still unfound."
