People in the village of Parkmill in Gower, Swansea, take part in the ancient Welsh tradition of celebrating the New Year in early January, using a Mari Lwyd, which is a horse's skull mounted on a pole. The custom is believed to have started in 1800 with groups of people following the Mari Lwyd from house to house across villages in South Wales. In recent years the event has gained in popularity with many events being held across Wales to help revive the tradition.
