It is the third, if not the fourth, Cathedral built this same site. The first authentic one was founded by Ethelbert, 607, for Mellitus a colllpanion of S. Augustine, but London had its Bishop long before that, Restitutus, one of its Bisllops, being present at the Council of Arles, 314. enlarged this pritnitive structure which was finally burnt 1087. Rebuilt immediately in a more magnificent manner, and of a size far surpassing any other in Christendom, it again fell a prey to the awful fire of 1666. The present building was commenced in 1675 and finished in at a cost of about a million It is feet in length, S9 feet high internally, and from the pavement to the top of the gilded cross 370 feet. Tllere are six services daily, and on special a slnall fee is charged to see the Crypt, Galleries, and Library. "
