One of the prime causes of boilerexplosion is the gradual and insidious increase of thepressure of steam beyond the endurance of the boiler;but to every boiler there is a limit of pressure withinwhich it is substantially safe. This point should beascertained by hydraulic test annually, and no excessof pressure beyond this limit should be allowed at anytime. The only sure preventive is a safety valvewhich is all its name implies. The diameter of asafety valve is not a test of its efficiency.
