The new Church covered some graves, the tombstonesof which were set up under the Church. The building,remarkably neat and handsome, as Bishop Hobart de-scribed it, was consecrated by him on July 15, 1822. Itwas particularly recommended as having a chancel, desk,and pulpit so conveniently arranged as to accommodate allthe worshippers with a full view of the chancel. 120 ORIGIN AND HISTORY Mr. Sayres was instituted rector Oct. 30, I8l9. He hadshown himself to be a man of large views as to thereligious needs of the world. He was one of the foundersof the American Bible Society. This was a notable evi-dence of his liberal spirit. He also was a strong upholderof the Churchs influence, from which he had received hisordination to the ministry of the Gospel of Christ.
