In the early mining days, following its discovery, in1857, the mine was extensively worked by surface cuts and openings,from which more than 250,000 tons of ore were extracted and milled,yielding very fair returns. Commencing in 1894, the mine has beenopened, by means of a shaft and tunnels, to a depth of 400 feet. Asteam-power hoist, and a six-drill air-compressor, have been placed atthe mine, and a thirty-stamp water-power mill, and a chlorinationplant for treating the sulphurets, have been erected and operated >??.
